STRATEGIES FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF PERFORMANCE AT THE SUPRASEGMENTAL LEVEL OF THE ENGLISH SPEECH OF SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS: The status of the English language according to Onuigbo (2010) varies according to different national language polices. As a world language, English is various things to various peoples. At this point, the status of English language in Nigeria shall be examined with reference to the function it performs in the face of extreme multilingualism. The English language is accorded the status of a second language as well as an official language in the countries education or school system. The federal government of Nigeria accords the English language a primal status above other foreign languages in the school curriculum, in view of its place in the life and the development of the nation. Writing on the high regard for the English, Olagoke (1979) states that “success in the language is the key to descent employment”. Admission to post- primary and tertiary institutions depend partly on ones performance in English language. Baldeh (1990) support this view when he writes that this language has been raised to an enviable status by the demands of the certification system.
